When: Wednesday, May 9th Time: 7 to 9pm Where: St. James Community Square, 3214 W 10th Ave (at Trutch Street) in Kitsilano Please join us and invite your family and friends this Wednesday in Kitsilano for some drinks and socializing, a fun presentation, and to see some magnificent art donated by esteemed BC artists, including Mark Hobson, Anne Hansen, Ingrid Koivukangas, and many others as a benefit event for our young organization! We'll also present an entertaining 2 year anniversary slideshow about the AFA - what we've done, and where we're going! Permission to build Avatar Grove boardwalk requested by the Ancient Forest Alliance from the BC Ministry of Forests
Yesterday the Ancient Forest Alliance submitted a request to BC’s Ministry of Forests to build an official trail and boardwalk in the famed “Avatar Grove,” a monumental stand of old-growth redcedars and Douglas firs that was recently protected near the town of Port Renfrew on Vancouver Island.

Local activists in nearby communities are doing everything they can to hold off the company from logging nearby endangered forests until the lands can be purchased for protection. Protect the Cameron Valley’s Endangered Forests!
Located near the town of Port Alberni, the Cameron River Valley is home to some of the most significant remnant old-growth stands left on southern Vancouver Island, where almost 90% of the productive old-growth forests have already been logged. These ancient forests in the Cameron Valley are currently threatened by Island Timberland's logging.
Forum on Juan de Fuca Lands – Thursday, May 3rd
Come to the forum on the fate of the forest lands within the Juan de Fuca region and Capital Regional District, "Our Forests, Our Future". The AFA's Ken Wu speaks about the need for a provincial park acquisition fund (similar to those of many regional districts) to buy private lands for protection on a much larger scale. Groups make appeal to save forest
Cameron Valley Firebreak was formerly protected as an ungulate winter range for Roosevelt elk and black-tailed deer, but lost protection in 2004 when the provincial government allowed Weyerhaeuser to remove 88,000 hectares of private managed forest land from tree farm licences.
Environmental groups decry logging near Cathedral Grove
TJ Watt, Ancient Forest Alliance co-founder, said, "The grove is just jampacked with elk signs and ancient coastal Douglas firs - 99 per cent of which have already been logged."
Crown lands belong to the public, not government
British Columbians are once again being treated to increased controversy about the management of our Crown land forests - whether it is the decreased role of the chief forester, new threats to remove land from forest reserves or the privatization of the forests themselves.

Island Timberlands Begins Logging Old-Growth in Area Formerly Intended as Protected Elk Winter Range in the Cameron Valley near Port Alberni
The Cameron Valley Firebreak is an extremely rare, 150 hectare section of old-growth forest that spans the distance from the valley bottom to mountain top that is a 30 minute drive from the town of Port Alberni and lies several kilometres upstream from the world-famous Cathedral Grove.
